Understand what detection scores cannot establish and replace automatic accusations with checks of sources, provenance and usefulness.
What a detector measures
A detector classifies features under a model, dataset and threshold. Its displayed number should not automatically be interpreted as a calibrated probability of origin for the document. Separate text classification, plagiarism, documentary provenance and factual accuracy: they are different questions requiring different evidence.
Test errors in your context
Evaluate relevant languages, lengths, topics, authors and versions. Results from one evaluation set do not guarantee equivalent performance elsewhere. Sadasivan and coauthors examine detector vulnerabilities under paraphrasing, with findings scoped to their experiments. Include human, generated and edited texts, and document false positives, false negatives and unevaluable cases.
Prefer documented investigation
Scores may trigger review but should not independently produce accusations or sanctions. Examine available drafting history, references, reproducible calculations and editorial reasoning. Missing drafts do not prove AI use. Retain only evidence you are authorized to process and provide a route to explain or correct conclusions.
Assess usefulness for readers
Check whether the page answers its topic, contributes information, supports facts and states limitations clearly. Human-written text can be poor or misleading; assisted content can be useful after review. Google warns that producing many pages without added value may constitute scaled content abuse. Production method does not remove the need to follow content policies.
Build independent editorial checks
Define content ownership, required sources and rules for numbers, quotations, testimonials and images. Verify decisive claims regardless of whether a detector labels the text human or generated. A reassuring result does not authorize invented data. Label fictional examples beside the example and do not replace unknown information with plausible values.
Track observable quality
Measure factual corrections, genuinely useful answers and reference maintenance. If using a detector, retain its version and limitations as with any advisory tool. Avoid optimizing to bypass scores, which encourages surface rewriting without improving evidence. The intended outcome is a useful, verifiable page rather than an automatic label.
Practical checks
- Separate detection, plagiarism, provenance and accuracy in the record.
- Evaluate errors by language and text type before decision-making use.
- Verify facts independently of scores and provide a review process.
Frequently asked questions
Is a high score enough to accuse an author?
No. Examine model limits and other available evidence while allowing a response.
Does rewriting for a human score improve SEO?
It establishes neither usefulness nor accuracy. Improve answers, evidence and reader fit.
Can non-AI writing violate content policies?
Yes. Spam, misleading claims and low-value content do not become useful merely through manual writing.
